Samsung NX2000/NX500 Camera
I came across a discussion where googleexpedia found cameras running Tizen and theubusu cracking the can of the Samsung’s NX500 and NX2000 cameras, which weren’t encrypted - a rare find in today’s world of locked-down consumer devices. That alone piqued my curiosity.
So I grabbed a firmware update file for myself, ran binwalk, and surprisingly, it opened right up. No obfuscation, no encryption. Just a clean embedded Linux system ready to explore - possibly even running Tizen, or at least borrowing pieces of it.
Here’s a dive into what I found inside.
The origin of this photo seems to be from ElementaryOS??, however this image makes an appearance in many Tizen-powered devices.
We also run into extra images that dont appear anywhere else in Tizen firmwares:
These seem to be taken by other Samsung cameras, probably for fun or some impractical reason, however it’s doutbful they’re shown to the user.
These also come from the same elementaryOS package, moving on! Well, er… There isn’t much hidden content, we just finished it. The rest is what’s interesting, even if it’s visible by the user.
Camera’s power off splash images, alongside static images of the keyboard and some other IoT icons.
Some camera scene modes, and a low quality test image.
Mode select dial images
Some sort of NFC sync animation
At this point, for visual content, that’s it. However…
What about audio? Oh boy…
There are lots of these files, probably used for a video editor application or slideshow.
